The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows it to be used indirectly as a food additive and as a component of food-contact coatings. The average number of ethylene oxide monomers of PEG stearate is 2 to 150, and it is not lethal at a concentration below 10 g/kg. There is only minimal evidence of skin irritation and minimal eye irritation when tested at 100%. In the long-term feeding study, there was no significant change in the growth, histopathological observation or hematological value of PEG-8, -40 and -100 stearate. These ingredients can be used in cosmetics and personal care products.
